Getting into Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at Walt Disney World is no easy feat. It is one of the most popular bars on property — and for good reason.

Located at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, Trader Sam’s is an interactive bar experience inspired by Trader Sam, who you should recognize from the beloved Jungle Cruise attraction.

The tropical tiki bar has a range of delicious rum-based drinks (among others), small bites, and good fun. But, it’s not the easiest to get into. Reservations aren’t even accepted. You literally have to walk up, join a list, and hope for the best.

Because it’s so competitive, let’s talk about how to get into Trader Sam’s at Disney World.

Join the walk-up list

To get into Trader Sam’s at Disney World, you can join a walk-up list in person or via the My Disney Experience app. There isn’t a virtual queue, nor can you make reservations.

While many find it inconvenient, that’s just how Trader Sam’s operates (unlike Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar in Disneyland, which does take reservations). Previously, you could only join the walk-up list in person, so being able to join a mobile walk-up list is a huge improvement.

That said, to join the walk-up list via the mobile app, you have to be in the Polynesian Village Resort area and somewhat close to Trader Sam’s.

If you want to join the walk-up list in person, you can find Trader Sam’s near Capt. Cook’s Quick Service location, on the same level as the lobby.

If there is a line, you’ll obviously get in it and wait until you reach the Cast Member outside Trader Sam’s entrance. They’ll ask for your name, how many in your party, and your phone number.

If there isn’t a line and you don’t see a Cast Member outside the entrance, go inside and give your information at the host stand.

I always ask how long the estimated wait is just so I have an idea. Of course, this is an estimate and never guaranteed. Your wait will also depend on your party size. Whenever your table is ready, you will receive a text.

Arrive at least 90 minutes prior to opening

If you want to get into Trader Sam’s early and not have to wait hours, I suggest arriving early. Basically, you need to rope drop.

IMPORTANT: As of December 16, 2025, Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto now opens at 11 a.m. Previously, it opened at 3 p.m. Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace, the outdoor bar, also now opens at 11 a.m. It’s unclear if these new hours make it easier to enter Trader Sam’s or if you still need to arrive least 90 minutes prior to opening. Whatever the case (and until I’m able to test it myself), I suggest arriving as early as you can, especially if the bar is a priority.

Trader Sam’s opens at 11 a.m. daily and closes at midnight (be sure to check the hours ahead of time). So, you’ll want to arrive at least 90 minutes prior to opening. Trader Sam’s usually starts taking names 60 minutes (sometimes earlier) before they officially open.

A line will build — and fast. Here’s an example of what a wait for Trader Sam’s could look like (prior to the hours change): I once joined the walk-up list in person at 3:15 p.m. and was told the wait would be about 2 hours and 30 minutes. I received a text my table was ready at 6 p.m.

You definitely need to plan accordingly when it comes to Trader Sam’s.

Don’t venture too far after joining the list

You’ll receive a notification via the My Disney Experience app or text when your table is ready. Depending on your wait, you might not want to go too far, because you only have 15 minutes to return.

If you miss your return time, you will have to rejoin the list. I’ve had this happen before, but, luckily, there was an opening and we were escorted in immediately. However, that is not always the case.

I suggest having a plan if you have a long wait for Trader Sam’s. There is plenty to do at Polynesian, including making a reservation ahead of time at ‘Ohana or Kona Cafe.

You could also grab a table at Tambu Lounge, where you can order the famous ‘Ohana Noodles and Bread Pudding. Or, you can even hop on the monorail and visit Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa or Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

Once you’re inside, have fun!

Trader Sam’s is truly a good time! If you like tropical drinks, especially rum, this is the place for you. You can even take some of the tiki mugs home as a souvenir (many guests even collect them)!

Keep in mind that this in an interactive bar, meaning that there is a brief show with most of the drinks. For a small moment, you and your beverage will be the center of attention.

I know this isn’t for everyone. As someone who doesn’t like attention and is a bit of an introvert, I have never once felt uncomfortable at Trader Sam’s. It’s all in good fun. Plus, many other guests are receiving drinks at the same time, so the attention won’t always solely be on you.

The bartenders and servers at Trader Sam’s are some of the best on property. They are a good time and make your experience worthwhile.

If you’re looking for a good cocktail, I’m partial to the Zombie, the Nautilus (as seen above), and the Uh-Oa. The Nautilus and Uh-Oa are technically for two or more guests, but many order this all for themselves.

A few other things to know when visiting Trader Sam’s

  1. You can also visit Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace, Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto’s outdoor sister bar at the Polynesian. You can find the bar by exiting the door closest to Grog Grotto and making a right. Tiki Terrace has the exact same menu as the indoor location, but minus the interactions and other fun. Sometimes there’s even live music. This is a great spot to relax and enjoy a beverage.

  2. Depending on your party size, you might have to share a table. Because Trader Sam’s has many guests to move in and out, table-sharing is key. It’s similar to how Oga’s Cantina operates.

  3. Kids are allowed in Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto until 8 p.m. After that, the bar is for guests 21 and older.

  4. There are small bites offered, but you’re not going to get a full meal here. You can also order the same food at Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace.

  1. I love that you provided photos of the drinks and the menu, that is so helpful. My question: if I don’t drink but I want one of the souvenir glasses, can I just buy it? or would they make a non-spiked version for me?

    1. I’m so glad! I believe you have to buy the drink in order to get the souvenir mug. I’m not sure if they can or will make it without alcohol (and if you’d have to pay the same price). It definitely doesn’t hurt to ask to see what they say.
